18th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

Thanks again to ICAM i´m again late with my box-office analysis.
And that´s not all.
I´m not so sure about this weeks numbers since they don´t make much sense. Hey, but i may be wrong so i will post them anyway just in case.
Why i say they are wrong?
Because some days ago, in "Metro"(a journal) we had the information of a 96000 spectators in one week for the movie "King kong". So who is wrong? Don´t know. I can only assure that when i went see it at the premiere there were like 200 people just in my movie theather.

According to ICAM, we had one of the worst weeks of the year, considering a big opener like, "KING KONG" is.
With 150469 spectators for the week, that´s an 41% drop since last week of the top 10 players. Only two films droped less than 50% and many of them above 60%.

We have a new number one and i know you guessed it. It´s...Wait and see

We are considering the week between 15 to 21 of December 2005

The Champion:
.
Gaining the top spot with no surprises,"King Kong" but with a suprisingly bad start. At only 54361 spectators it is an opening worse than even "The Chronicles of Narnia" and much worse than the gigantic opening of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". New numbers have been released and they said that King Kong was at 234000 after two weeks. Let´s just wait and see what happens next week. Something is definetely wrong.
.
The New Players:
.
"Renart the Fox", the luxemburg animation movie in 3D, did badly as all movies this week. With an estimate 2518 spectators and the number 13 spot, that is indeed a very bad opening. Hope that better weeks come for him too. The competition is fierce, but we are talking animation movie and they do well here.
.
At number 17 we encounter "The Great Raid". The opening of a War movie in Christmas time was not a smart move. And the numbers show it. Only 1708 spectators the whole week. But i guess this one would always be an alien in here no matter what. Practically unknown actors and director here and a theme unknown to us in Portugal, was an receipt to failure. ANd there it is a complete failure
.
The Consecutive Players:
.
At number 2 and after one week at the top we have "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Warrior, the Witch and the Wardrobe" with 27678 and a gigantic drop of 56%. There are worse ones this week but this one did hurt it´s box-office capabilities. Expect a rise next week but still, it is ruined in here as expected. Nobody knew about this book here.
.
At number 3 "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" with 199904 and continuing the trend a 64% drop. It already made the money it had to do and that´s a very impressive one at 423834 spectators total. Expect it to finish around 480000 spectators with a small rise next week. Not that it deservs it but...
.
"Chicken Little" had also a bad week with a 61% drop since last week to 10895 spectators. It, in spite of that, made it possible to win in the animation department to the new opening by a large margin. And it already is in it´s 5th week. Not bad.
.
One of the biggest drops of the week at 69% to 7283 spectators is "Just Like Heaven". For a romantic comedy it is doing very well not for beeing one of the best ever but for beeing the only at the moment avaible to couples around Portugal. And that my friends give money to Hollywood. Some competition is needed. Send it.
.
At number 6 this week for the 3rd straight week is "O Crime do Padre Amaro". With an impressive number of spectators in theathers it makes it the second most grossing movie in the history of Portuguese Cinema. And the number one spot is for the taking but only hardly will it get there. Despite of that it is a very strong image for portuguese cinema and maybe more people will go see it. I hope they go see some good one next time.
.
The first film with and impressive week, considering the scenario is "Broken Flowers" by Jim Jarmusch. With a 38% drop to 6939 spectators that´s a very good week considering the competition and a good boost to the spectators total. I Guess winning at Cannes really pays off.
.
At number 8 we have "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" with 6364 spectators and a 70%!!! drop since last week. Wowwww. that is a big drop and i believe the biggest ever since i do the box-office analysis. Though luck, Lucífer.
.
The suprise of the week is "The Constant Gardener". Destined to disapear and go away since last week it left the top 10 spots to number 11, it returned this week with a vengeance to number 9 with 5516 spectators and a small drop of 20%. Very good award to a very good film. Kudos Fernando Meirelles for making one of the best of the Year. Here is your reward.
.
Finally at number 10 and with not much to say we have "The Fog". A bad film and a even worse remake from a classic horror movie by Carpenter got a 69% drop to 4398. Like the names says, who wants to go see a movie they can´t even see anything. Beats me. Good ridance.
.
Next Week we will have:
.
- "Corpse Bride" (i predict a toe to toe battle with "King Kong". My movie theather was really packed to go see it. But the number 2 spot is is number)
- "The Family Stone" (the christmas movie to all family. Will do reasonably at number 5 spot. maybe 4 not more)
- "Santa´s Slay" (i don´t get this one. Trashed by the critics. Will do bad. Not at the top 10 spots).
.
And that is all.
See ya next week.
Bye
