16th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

Not remarkable here. Just another box-office analysis of sunny (but now very cold) Portugal.

We had a very strong week, altough not as good as last week. With 377241 spectators for the week and a 11% drop in number of spectators, we have, still, the second biggest week at the box-office.
Altough no big openers graced us this week, we had some solid new ones and some very small drops from the repeat offenders at the box-office from last week.

A new number one? Maybe yes or maybe not...
You will see in a while.

We are considering the week between 1 to 7 of December

The Champion:

At number one it´s old news. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" held firmly in the top spot with 132937 spectators and a 37% drop. Impressive for a big blockbuster that tend to have drops above 45% in it´s second week. Probably will be at the top three movies of the year below "Madagascar" and "King Kong". This one is really bringin up a crowd to theathers everywhere. Not the best Potter but still very lovable by the audience.

The New Players:

The first opener only gets to the number 3 spot. "Just Like Heaven" conjured a very good number of spectators at 42383. The love for Reese is really big here in Portugal. It even did better than my number 6 prediction. And three numbers better. Expect a good strong week since there aren´t that much romantic comedies around. And when there are few, people tend to flock to the few there are.

At number 4 and also perfoming greatly (altough not as good as in the U.S) is "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". With 38243 spectators total this week, this marks another great opener for the horror/courtroom/drama category. Wait a minute... This is the first one of those so it had to perform at it´s best. There is no term of comparison.
See Hollywood originality gains money. Try this more times.

"Oliver Twist" did gained the crowd it was expecting. Like predicted it opened at the number 8 spot with 13226 spectators. This, as all Polanski´s movies don´t get any attention here in Portugal (the notable exception was "The Pianist", that even at the release didn´t get attention just a while later). Is it somekind of curse to Roman at the box-office in Portugal. Who knows.

The Consecutive Players:

At number 2 for the second time in a row "Chicken Little" is perfoming way above Disney´s greatest expectations, i assume. With 53931 spectators and a meager 2% drop since last week this is indeed a gigantic result for the Disney´s first foray into 3D animation without the giant Pixar. ALtough the Disney charm is somewhat lacking in this story in comparison to the classic 2d animation of Disney. Yes, even from Sidbad that was a big failure and marked the end of 2d animation to disney. Good scripts sell movies still, not 3d animation. But i guess i am wrong right??

"Flightplan" is on a downspiral to the end of the box-office. With 29923 and a 25% drop, we are entering the dreaded 5th week, that generally marks the end of all movies at the box-office. And that is next week. But we have to say that in the 4 weeks at the top it did conjure some hefty numbers to boot. Jodie Foster is baaack and with a vengeance.

All hail the portuguese champion (that yet never got a number 1 spot, just almost). In it´s 6th week "O Crime do Padre Amaro" had 28701 spectators and a 15% drop. Indeed a very strong and still going career of this portuguese movie. It is almost near the number 3 spot of all time considering portuguese movies.

At number 7 we have "Into the Blue" with a 27% drop to 14703 spectators this week. A normal career for a film especially made for the weak of mind. Hey, there is nothing wrong with that. But personally i demand something a little better to make me drop 4 euros and go see a movie. A little more than just Jessica Alba (and i don´t mean her acting).

"The Constant Gardener" is the surprise hit of the season. WIth a 10% drop to 11682 spectators we have a very decent run of Meirelles guerrilla tactics movie. His camera work is amzing but still unique. And that is a lot to say. It´s difficult to be recognized as a director that way. You go Meirelles. We can´t wait for your next.

Finally at number 10 "Deuce Bigalow - European Gigolo" with the biggest drop this week at 39%, to 11512 spectators. Not much to say. The film won´t exactly make history and in about , well a month nobody will ever remember it existed. And i´m including Rob Scnheider in that group.

Next Week we will Have:

- "The Chronicles of Narnia:The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" (The number 1 spot? I think it´s possible. But it will have to conjure a strong opening)
- "The Fog" (The horror movie of the week. i predict a number 7 place for it. Not much better than that)
- "Broken Flowers" (the small number of theather count implies a not so great opening. Probably not at the top 10 spots)
- "O Fatalista" (a portuguese movie loved by the critics but i guess not by the audience. I can be proven wrong. But definitely not at the top 10 spots).

See ya guys next week. I hope. It will be difficult to find a computer to make the analysis but will try.
If not. Happy Christmas and a Merry New year or is it the other way around??

Bye
