13th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

SO here we have it. The number 13th.
I hope it´s not a bad luck number for this site. And i hope it will pass this horrible number and become like the 113th one day in the future.

In terms of Box-office this is not a bad luck week. We had a 17% increase in spectators this week in the top 10 which is extremely good since we now are having great weeks all around, since three weeks ago. We passed from 212319 to 248975 spectators, making this week the second biggest week since i started doing the business analysis. Not bad for an unlucky number.

Unfortunately history was again not made. But now for more than 1017 since a new number one took the top spot with no regrets at 90338 spectators. A BIG OPENNING. Who was it?

We are considering the week from 10 to 16 of November.

The New Players:

And the number 1 spot goes to a new opener. It´s "Flightplan", the vehicle to carry Jodie Foster back to mainstream after Panic Room in 2002 work. And the mother in distress is again the topic to cover. Can she only play moms now? She´s got to do something new and fast if she wants to see me again seeing one of her movies. But i guess for the rest of Portugal couldn´t care less. They just wanna see her. That explains the fantastic opening at 90338 spectators and the undisputed numbero uno spot.
.
"Elizabethtown" got the 4th spot. Not very good but not bad indeed. I expected it would be out of the top 4´s but then again it did get the number 4. The film is not one of Crowe´s best moments but it did much better than "In Her Shoes" 2 weeks ago. And this is a chick flick by nature. It won´t hold that much next week. I predict, but i tend to be wrong 30% of the time.
.
No more top10 openers but at number 17 we have "Arsene Lupin" the french movie of a very known robber, played by Romain Duris. The european big name for every movie he is in. The film is not one of best and people have other blockbusters to choose from. And they tend to choose american ones. It did get 3218 spectators. Well not everything is perfect...
.
From "Dom Quixote from Orson Welles" no news since it didn´t get a top 20 spot. One thing for sure this is not a Orson Welles movies. it´s a Orson Welles make believe film.
.
The Consecutive Players:
.
At number 2 we have the portuguese champion of the year, and probably of the last ten years. "The Crime of Father Amaro" is really getting loads of attention and it got a 8% rise since last week to 44050 spectators. It will never have a number one spot considering the openigns of next weeks but it will rank in the top 20 films of the year in here. And that is something unheard off even also considering european movies.
.
"The Legend of Zorro" is at number 3 as expected considering the 38% drop and giving it´s place to the portuguese not superior but espectators wise bigger. At 26032 spectators it has already reached it´s peak and it´s all downhill from here.
.
Who would have known this would be this sucsessfull? "The Constant Gardener" with a small 25% drop to 15763 got again a great week in run at theathers. The Fernando Meirelles movie is getting the attention it deserves since we portuguese are very much connected to Africa and it´s problems. We were in Angola, Moçambique, Guiné, Cabo Verde and S.Tomé e Príncipe for a long time...
.
At number 6 one of the first big droppers. it´s "Doom" with a 46 % drop to 13567 spectators. The run was expected and this drop was more than expected. Expect it to drop fast again next week. Call it faith, but these kind of movies get what they deserve every time.
.
All hail the animation kings of this year Aardman Studios. "Wallace & Grommit:The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" got the number 7 spot due to a small 25% drop., to 13507 spectators Very good result, but next week it will be dealt the axe with the theathers counts going way down. It is the dreaded 4 th week and almost every film gets it. Even Star Wars had the axe at the fourth week. Nobody is safe.
.
"The 40 Year Old Virgin" is the sleeper hit of the year after "Charlie and the CHocolate Factory". For it´s 7th week it maintains it´s top 10 spot at number 8. It has a chance to maintain this spot for another week if the drop is not that big. This week 33% drop was not very bad but next week it has to be better.
.
At number 9 we have "The Amytiville Horror" doing great for it´s 4th week. At 9152 spectators and a 32% drop it did great but won´t last next week new contestants to the top crown. It´s arriverdeci for the horror genre of the top 10 spots. Who will be the new horror champ. Probably "The Exorcism of Emily Rose".
Closing the top 10 we have a heavy dropper at 51%. It´s "In Her Shoes" that got the axe at it´s 2nd week. A very disapointing run for this Curtis Hanson. It isn´t that bad but it didn´t got the buzz nor any attention at all.
.
Next week the new players are:
.
- "Chicken Little" (The Top Spot? It has to conjure a top opening and i don´t think it will. Number 2 spot mark my words)
- "Deuce Bigalow-European Gigolo" (It´s a stupid comedy and those always score points in here. Not in my department but hey who the hell am i right. Max, the top 6 spot. Not better.
- "Manô "(this is another portuguese movie with some chances. It´s is an original take in portuguese cinema since it´s the first to have 40 minutes of digital mastering of image. Our first special effects movie. It will do good just not great. The top 4 spots would be great for the future of special effects in here)
.
See you next week for another analysis.
Bye
