15th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

This is the number 15.
We have been together for a long time and to be even a little bit more.

This week we have the biggest week ever since the analysis began. With 424355 spectators for the first top ten, that means a 57% rise since last week and a very big week to boot.

The reason for this. We are in December and we had a big opener with more than 200000 in just one week. I think the responsible isn´t very difficult to name but i still won´t do it yet. In a little while.
The portuguese movie champion is still doing it´s thing and is now officially the 5th, in terms of portuguese films, most sucsessful at the box-office.

We are considering the week from 24 to 30 of November.

The Champion:

We have a new number one and has i said last week, this was a no brainer. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire". You didn´t even had to had a brain to guess this one. With 210898 spectators in just a week, i conjured the biggest week ever at the box-office in Portugal (since i started this analysis). A very good result, altough the film was not what i was expecting. But generally it pleased everyone who saw it. And i think will soar at the box-office in here. Just harry potter in the name, mean money in the bank.

The New Openers:

At number 5 we have "Into the Blue", the Jessica Alba vehicle (i saying this lots of time) to gain box-office queen goddess failed to impress, with only 20192 spectators. She is good looking no doubt about it. But she really needs to get some acting lessons. And i say this in a good hearted manner. Improve as an actress. That´s the only way to the top.

At number 8, "Proof" with 12351 spectators has also gone the same road. The not impressing one. The tired debacle of insanity vs genius is getting a bit tiresome. I know that sometimes they strike gold with oscars they didn´t deserve but people don´t fall for sappy crazy stories all the time. Just ask Lasse Halstrom.

Not gaining the top 10 status, just barely is "Cry Wolf" with only 4487 in only 8 theathers. A very bad result considering we are talking about an horror movie. The trailer definitely didn´t help. It was far away from average even. And teen slasher movies already had it´s day. Now it´s more a gory time. Bring it on.

The consecutive Players:

With a great second week, we have "Chicken Little", the latest 3D animation to hit the barrio. They are just like mushroom. Almost every week we are having one. Even from the likes of Luxemburg, from where i didn´t ever have seen any movie, period. With 55212 spectators and a small 22% drop since last week, this is one strong second week. As is natural with all animation movies. Nothing new here. Expect a not so good but still great third week.

Still going strong is also "Flightplan". Droping to the number 3 spot with 40043 spectators and a 34% drop, we have an ok result for a third week. Despite, the crappy finale, it the first half of the movie is very satisaftory in a thriller kind of way. But next week is week number four and that generally means doom. No, not the film.

At number 4 "Crime do Padre Amaro" is still it´s amazing run At a total of 216311 spectators it is now the number 5 in terms of total box-office for a portuguese movie.The film is not the greatest but still is having people going to see it and that is a very strong feat for any portuguese movie. i´m not gonna see it. Because there is always something better to go see first. And there are many good ones that still don´t get to be seen.

"Deuce Bigalow - European Gigolo" is at number 6. With 18822 spectators and a 32 percent drop, the comedy gross-out (as i baptized it) movie is holding it´s head in the top spots. Not that hard when you are the only comedy playing in the top 10 spots. It´s was an easy market for it. Kudos to the people that opened in here at the right time. At 40 year old virgin time it would have been a disaster.

We have the same spot for it, the number 7, since last week. A small 18% drop, since last week and a still healthy 12917 spectators and what do we have here? A very good movie. "The Constant Gardener" by Fernando Meirelles. A tour de force and an amazing film. Go See it will it lasts.

At number 9 "Elizabethtown" is getting what it deserves. You just watch "Constant Gardener" perfomance and you gasp why? I will tell you why. The Cameron Crowe is not at it´s prime (lamest movie of him) and Meirelles is doing it better. Result: 35% drop and only 10312 spectators in it´s third week. Not that amazing. That´s the word.

Finally at number 10 "The Legend of Zorro". It still clinged to a top 10 spot, despite the 50% drop for 9828 spectators. There is nothing more to say about this one. Just that, the world didn´t need another Zorro like this one. We deserved vintage and got lamage (this coming from lame).

Next Week we will have:

- The Exorcism of Emily Rose (a very good spot for this one. A top 5 spot in the least. It´s the horror movie of the season and it has got lawyers)

- Oliver Twist (this one i don´t know. Will it please children. Or adults or both? It will get maybe a 8 place. Maybe?)

- Just Like Heaven (people here also like Reese. this one will do great. Beeing great a top 6 spot. I wouldn´t bet my money on it though)

- An Unfinished Life (ummmmm... No, not in the top 10. Less than that. Mark my words. The theather count is not the biggest)
