19th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

A very bad week, again. If the numbers are correct. But i guess they must be.
It´s difficult to believe though, because we are in holiday week (Christmas) and the numbers are so low, we just can´t believe them.
With only 105698 spectators for the top ten movies, we have a very disapointing week for all the movies in the list. That means a 30% drop from a not so impressive last week and making this one the worst week ever of the portuguese box-office since the analysis started.

This time the delay was my fault. I could have done it yesterday and with better information but i lost all my informations in the computer. So i have a low amount of time to do this.

No news at the number one spot. Still remember what it was last week?
We also have, a not very impressive openings by two films. "Tim Burton´s Corpse Bride" and "The Family Stone".

Just check it out:

We are considering the week from 22 to 28 of December

The Champion:
.
At the number one spot is still the same ape, or in this case the one and only "King Kong". With 25054 spectators and a 54% drop, we have a very dispointing run for the big simian and especially for all the build-up concerning this movie.. It really deserved a lot better than Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and The CHronicles of Narnia. Reality bites sometimes.
.
The New Openers:
.
At number 3 we encounter "Tim Burton´s Corpse Bride" with 17209 spectators. Considering it´s a animation movie and a vintage Burton, this is not a good opening. Burton´s films tend to grow on the crowd department as weeks go bye. Let´s see...
.
"The Family Stone" opened at number 5 with an estimate 10501 spectators. A very low number considering the time of the year.Or something is worng in the number counting of ICAM or something is worng that people don´t go to cinema anymore. We will see the conclusions next week.
.
The last opener of the week is out of the top 10 at number 14. "Santa´s Slay" managed 2450 people in just 2 theathers. not bad for a so small opening. I Guess seeing Santa do naughty things really lifts up the Chrismas spirit. The only problem is the film is bad. Really bad. Yes, Really.
.
The Consecutive Players:
.
At the number 2 spot for the second straight week is "The Chronicles of Narnia:The Warrior, The Witch and the Wardrobe". With 18497 spectators and a 33% drop (not Bad) it managed to maintain the spot above "Corpse Bride". Movies that are especially directed to children are getting the most attention here in Portugal. they really are the saviors of the portuguese Box-Office.
.
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" maintains strong numbers in it´s 5th week. With 10551 and a 47% drop, the number 3 spot of the year is for the taking, behind the already other players of the top 3, with 690000 and 500000 respectively for Madagascar and War of the Worlds.
.
Another animation movie getting the top spots (at number 6) for 6 straight weeks is "Chicken Little". With 8350 and a small drop of 23% makes a very strong 6th week. The total numbers are also impressive at 227135 spectators. Bravo.
.
The romantic comedy is still holding it´s ground at number 7. "Just Like heaven", with 4406 spectators and a 40% drop. On the top spots for four weeks and a decent run for the Reese Witherspoon vehicle.
.
"The Constant Gardener" is the surprise of Christmas season. In only 5 theathers, and in it´s 8th week at the box-office and with a return to the top 10 spots last week, after leaving for a week. With 4282 spectators and a 22% small drop (the smallest of the week), it managed to even gain a position and ge to number 8. A very good run and the best prize for one of the best movies of the year.
.
At number 9 we have "Broken Flowers". With 3593 spectators and a 48% drop, we encounter a very bad run for a Cannes Film festival winner. It still isn´t getting lots of attention. It has the indie curse that gets every film in here. They never get blockbuster big, no matter what.
.
Finally at number 10 "O Crime do Padre Amaro" is saying goodbye to the top spots. With an impressive run for a portuguese movie, it managed to get 3255 in it´s 9th week and a 54% drop. The number 2 portuguese movie ever will not get to the top portuguese movie spot. It only managed 276874 and that´s a long way from the number one spot "Tentação".
.
Next Week we will have:
.
- "The Descent" (The brit chiller is doing great in here i bet. At least the time i went ssee it the room was crowded and the fear was loud and clear. Will got it´s attention. Number 3 or 2 spot for it.)
- "Revolver" (a little attention and lots of fried brains i expect from this one- A top 10 spot at 9 or 8)
- "Odete" (opened with 2700 people. I already know. not in the top spots...As expected.)
- The others could get a spot but they don´t deserve the attentio. And there is work to do...
.
See ya next week.
