Another week of box-office in Portugal.
And it was a very strong week.

One thing was for sure and that was, that "Ice Age:The Meltdown" maintain the number one spot.
Other thing that wasn´t for sure was such a strong week. This week marks, 6 weeks in which the number of spectators have a rise. This time of 21% to 397091 for the top ten films. One of the strongest weeks, ever, here in this analysis of the portuguese box-office.

Without further detail let´s move on to the list of the ten biggest films in Portugal.

We are considering the week between 6 to 12th of April

The Champion:
.
At number one nothing new. "Ice Age:The Meltdown" maintains a strong first place in it´s second week. And is in route to be this year biggest movie of the year. And for the third straight year that mean a 3D animation movie. It made 144490 spectators for a measly 6% drop from last week. This one will have good legs and will pass the 600.000 easily. Mark my words.
.
The New Players:
.
At number two we find the first new opener. And for one that tanked in the U.S, this is a very good result for "Basic Instinct 2" and Miss Sharon Stone. I guess we portuguese really like a mature women. The problem is the film is not all that good. And that will pay on it´s legs. Of the movie not of Miss Stone, which are in really good shape. Really.
It made 69975 spectators in 49 theathers across the country. Nice.
.
"Failure to Launch" has the worst translation to portuguese of the year. Just for you to know it´s "Como Despachar um Encalhado". If you don´t understand it don´t worry. It better this way. The film had a nice debut with 67481 spectators. The problem beeing the film sucks big time. Stop sending garbage if you can ok U.S.A? We need more "A History of Violence" not more bad rom-coms.
.
It´s only strong openers. This time it´s "Eight Below" the Disney story of a group of canine friend who get trapped in Antartica after saving a group of people from cold. How could this be?
Yes, it´s based in real events. Just like any Disney movie it´s sugar coated to make it the less bad to kids. Ahh, those days of Bambi were the days. No sugar coating the kids just plain reality. I think the kids can´t be lied about. And in this story the consequences were much more dire than the ones portraied in the movie. They need to know. At least a little bit.
Oh, it got 24884 spectators.
.
Closing the top ten is another opener, "Ultraviolet" the lates from the bad movies department. And guess what it stars Milla Jovovich. The girl has to start choosing some better projects. Or she is going down. It made 7976 spectators, and that means it bombed in here. A lousy result.
.
Only opening at the 12th of April, "Wild" made in one day 2663 spectators. Not a very good result. Let´s expect next week´s number are significantly better. When the competition is "Ice Age" then the "Wild" doesn´t stand a chance. And beeing a rip-off of last year´s "Madagascar" doesn´t help either.
.
The Other Players:
.
"Nanny Mcphee" is having strong weeks after it´s debut. This week was a 13% drop to 28677 spectators. A very strong third week, and a excelent result for the movie. Kids are flocking to see it. Godd family values are always nice to see on screen. And the rebirth of kids movies, also.
.
At number 6 is "V for Vendetta" with a big drop of 43% to 17684 spectators. Like any blockbuster it´s going down stron in it´s third week.
.
At number 7 we find "Casanova", with a big drop of 48% to 14356 spectators. Like any bad period movie it´s going down in it´s third week.
.
At number 8 we find "The Pink Panther", with the biggest drop of the week at 53%, to 13159 spectators. Like any bad movie it´s going down but not too soon. It maintained the spots for 4 weeks.
.
Doing a bit strongly is "The Tiger and the Snow" with a small 20% drop to 8409 spectators. Benigni, can a bit anoing but he still his in our hearts. And a new "La Vita é Bell" is always a pleasure to see.
.
Just a note to "Crash" that refuses to leave the top 20 movies of the week. At number 20 we find it, still clingin with 1590 spectators. But next week it won´t resist the onslaught of new openings. And that´s a bye bye for it. Rest in Peace.
.
Next Week we Will Have:
.
- "Hostel" (Will open big. We were craving for a new blood fest and this is the one. Will open number 4 i think)
- "Inside Man" (This one was a pleasure for me to see. Some people will think the same so it opens number 3)
- "The Ice Harvest" (This noir by Harold Ramis, will tank because few theathers and few marketing. Number 10 if it´s lucky)
- "Date Movie" (A stupid movie so it will open big at number 2-we just love them. What´s next the Sex Movie, The Gay Movie?)
- "The Wild" (Considering it´s 2663 in one day i predict a 25000 openign so number 6 for it)
.
See ya next week.
Good Night and Good Films.
