36th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis
Welcome Back or just plain welcome.
Another week and the trend continues. A new number one is at the top spot. A new champion of portuguese movie going crowd. They are not much but there are some of us in here.
This week we have 2 new entries at the top 10 spots and three other more at the top twenty and final top we have acess. And now i ask.
When do we get the total numbers for the week. That would be great to work on. A little more hardworking but still great.
We had a down week for a second time in a row. This time a 7% drop to 324880 spectators for the top ten movies. And 2006 is a fact, is even worse for cinema than 2005. Ticket buyers are down 20%. Bleak times, indeed.
We are considering the week between 13 to 19th of April

The Champion:
.
Wowww... This opening was way bigger than i expected. This is troubling for me since the saga "Scary Movie" is one of ones i hate the most. But it didn´t stop, "Scary Movie 4", from getting 101105 spectators and claiming the top spot. The number one was expected just not this strong. Sorry but still in shock. Expect a big drop next week, in the 40%.
.
The New Players:
.
At number 6 and this as expected, we find "Firewall". It managed 21165 spectators for the week and proved one thing. Mr Ford is getting old and he needs a big film fast or the parts will start to go down for him. If at least he took some chances but he still only plays safe. And that doesn´t lead you anywhere.
.
Opening at number 11 we find Rowan Atkinson´s latest "Keeping Mum". Despite the lack of theathers it managed a healthy 6006 spectators. The man is very popular in our parts. He is freakin Mr. Bean. And lots of us grew up with him. But for me is "Black Adder". The man was a genius there. But now he is going downhill. Another one that needs to take a chance and not to make money. And no a chance i don´t mean doing the next Scooby Doo sequel, please??
.
And this is a surprise. In just one theather we find "Lisboetas" that got 1718 and number 15 spot. A very good result for a documentary, winner of IndieLisboa 2004 for best portuguese feature and it opens now. It´s late but it´s worth it. For you out there who don´t know him, it was made by Sérgio Trefaut. Check it out if you can.
.
Finally at number 19, a canadian film by the name "Lie With Me". A sexual film, no doubt. Of a woman who can´t get enough of it, until she fins the love of his life. It got 1037 spectators. Not impressive but still better than i expected it.
.
The Other Players:
.
In number 2, in it´s second week we have a great holder. It´s "Inside Man", the latest from Spike Lee, which dropped 28% to 65502 spectators.
.
Another one perfoming well is "The Wild", with the smallest drop of the week of 25% to 23856 spectators. It will have some legs but it suffered from opening near the animation smash it "Ice Age".
.
On the downside we find "Date Movie" with a 56% drop, the biggest of the week.
.
The film holding for longer at the box-office top 10 is still "Ice Age: The Meltdown", who managed a number three spot in it´s 4th week, with 42960 spectators and a 43% drop. Kudos to Scratch and friends.
.
Next Week we Will Have:
.
- "The Producers" (i think this will bomb, big time. But surprises happen. In the top 20 with 5000)
- "Matador" (the latest from Mr Bond, James Bond. Will get a spot at the top ten. Number 7 with 14000)
-"L´Enfant" (the latest Palm D´or Cannes will get a top 20 spot with 4000. Few theathers will hurt it´s run)
-" Running Scared" (this straight to video that goes cinema wise will probably have a top 10 place in a very poor week. In the 10000 marc, number 8)
- The others don´t stand a chance to enter the top 20 "Veneno de Madrugada"
.
See ya next week
.
Good Night and Good Films
