50th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

It´s number 50. It finally arrives after 1 month away from home. And the box-office analysis returns with a vengeance. Will try to make two analysis per week to see if i get this in order before i go away again and this continues to go worse by the week. There is a new one every week and beeing four weeks realy makes it´s tool on the work to be done. And without beeing paid. Ahh, love makes us do this stupid things that we can´t help to.

This concerns the week between July 27th and August 2nd.
A strong week after a huge week of a great opening for the hit of the year "Pirates of the Caribean-Dead Man´s Chest". Why keep it a secret. It maintains it´s top spot easily with a big difference.
The small drop of 18% after a big opening is explained by the opening, in the top 20 of 7 new films!!!It dropped from 409654 to 337147 spectators so not bad.Yes, you heard it right. 7 new films in 20 is a lot. And 4 actually get a top 10 spot. The best one only at 3 so no big openers. But some suprises.Check them out when this analysis starts in just a few lines.

The Champion:

And the champion mantains it´s throne. It´s "Pirates of the Caribean:Dead Man´s Chest". And it doesn´t have any film to match it. Not even close. A very strong second week with more than 130000 spectators for the week. Amazing. And it´s a contestant to beat "The Da Vinci Code" for the best of 2006. We will see. But it will be a difficult task since it´s beyond the 750000 spectators total, the Code. The drop was of 43%, not bad for a big opening but it could have been better.

The Other Openers:

At number 11 we find the latest Palm D´Or winner "The Wind that Shakes the Barley" with a very poor opening of 2536 spectators with an average of 362 per theatre/week. If you compare it with "Cars" sixt week at 409 it says a lot about the disapointment of this opening. But the topic of Irish revolution is not the hottest one in Portugal so it didn´t got media attention. Just some from specialized publications. Haven´t seen it and with next weeks openings don´t think i will. We can´t see every film.

At number 19 is "Candy" the latest from Abby Cornish with Heath Ledger fresh from the latest Cowboy movie. Also one that suffered from the lack of attention and interest. And without the Palm D´Or it even had less attention. Only 1068 spectators.

Finally at number 20 "The Corsican Investigation". The Usual french movie with the usual suspects had the usual result. A dispointing one at 914 spectators and 183 average Theather/week. French cinema needs a boost or it will continue to suffer from the American onslaught of movies (bad or good, we eat them all-just look at the top 10).

Bye and see you in some days for number 51.

Good Night and Good Films.
