54th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis
The number is 54 and the works continues every week.
It´s always a pleasure to come back.
But time is running out and will start a new shift of work soon so probably number 55 will be my last one until December. Sorry
Continuing with this week analysis, we had a very strong week for openers. Of the 5 openers at the top 20 films, two of them occupied spot number 1 and number 2 so we could say we have a new champion after the comeback of last week´s "Miami Vice".
And we also have the biggest average per theather/week in box-office analysis history. Will know more about this and other stories in a little bit.
This was a strong week with 314028 spectators for the top ten movies, meaning a 13% increase comparing it with last week.
This concerns the week between 24 to 30 of August.

The Champion:
And we have a new King, literally. One very expected despite my personal lack of enthusiam for it. It is "Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties", with an 80184 spectators this last week, for an ok average of 1865. Not bad and dare i say even better than the original. But considering the first one was one of the worst films i saw (Hey i love Garfield but the films suck!!) that year this could be a surprise. And i was even told that this one is bearable. Maybe i will try it...in DVD.
The New Players:
But the biggest surprise and this one i wasn´t expecting a so strong first week is "United 93". With 76287 spectors with an average of 3179 Week/Theather, the biggest ever of the box-office analysis in Portugal, in just 24 theathers managed to almost get the first place spot. The 9/11 is still strong in the mind of everybody and this was an homage to all the victims of that terrible day. Despite feeling manipulated i have to say i really was shaken up. But one thing we know. We will never know what happened that day in that plane. But this could be very near the reality and just that thought is really scary.
At number 9 we find "The Myth", with 10837 spectators. A foreign movie from China/Hong Kong from Stanley Tong capitalizing on the impact that "Crouching Tigger Hidden Dragon" had on Chineese cinema. This is just one of the mant that followed. The only thing missing is that now it doesn´t feel new but we just feel sorry for putting more of this out. It´s not a bad movie but it´s definetely not new.
"Man About Town" the return of Ben Affleck to leading roles disapointed with the 6736 spectators week and a flabby 561 average. Not the ressurection he was expecting. But it could come this year with his portrayal of the legendary first Superman. We will see, come awards time.
Finally the last opener at number 15, "Mozart and the Whale" also trying to get the "weird" crowd to go see it but for that talent is required. And Petter Naess is no Pt. Anderson. Will disapear quickly and quietly. With not much of a fuss.
The Winner of the Week:
And this one is a no brainer this week. "United 93" managed an impressive run and this is thanks to the now number 1 average of 3179 spectators/week-Theather. Amazing.
Just a little note to the 4th consecutive weeks that "Lucky Number Slevin" is the film that dropped less of the top ten. Another amazing perfomance.
The Looser of the Week:
The easy answer would be "Over the Edge" but the prize has to go to "Superman Returns" for the second time in two weeks. A disapointing overall run marked with this week 48% drop. It´s not 53% like Over the Edge but Super only has 167266 total and Over the Edge has almost 400000. So the looser is, let´s say it all, "Superman Returns".
See you next week for more box-Office from Portugal.
