56th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

The sense of dejá-vu is very strong this week. That´s the first thing i want to say before anything else.
And the second one is the number 56. It´s a long way. More than one year talking about box-office in Portugal.
And unfortunately it will have a stop today since work is calling me to other places. And they are far away and with possibly no internet.
That´s the life i choose so i have to make it work. But i have to admit i´m sorry to leave the analysis by itself.

Ok no more small talk.

This week two new films at the top 10 and another one in the top 20. And the best new film this week is not american. And that is always big news. And at the top the news are not very exciting. We have 231732 spectators and -20% drop in number since last week´s top ten.

But let´s go straight to this week top ten. This concerns the week between 7 to 13 of September.

The Champion:

And yes, dejá-vu, we have the same number one and so it can only be "You, Me and Dupree". With a strong second week to 61739 spectators, is an excellent result for a comedy way above the best one so far this year until this bomb exploded in Portugal. And with a drop of 35% it´s holding on to maybe one more week if it´s lucky. Well done Mr. Wilson.

The New Players:

And yes the number one new film of the week is "Volver" the latest from Spanish master director Pedro Almodovar. We share the name and unfortunately not the talent or i would be the next best thing to happen to cinema. Ofcourse i went see it and it was a a pleasure as always to see the women. No ones films women better than Almodovar and i bet Holywood could use some tips on how to portrait women. It made 25858 spectators and a 1231 average per theather/week. Welcome back and let the Oscars roll.

At number 6 is bad news "Little Man" the latest from the Wayans brothers. Comeone does anyone find them funny. This are some sick guys but in the bad sense. They are not funny. For me since 18330 people though otherwise.

Finally the other new film is "Animal", an european production with one of our biggest actors (just for some) Diogo Infante portraying and animalistic killer that is used in the research of the violence gene with dire consequences.

The Winner of the Week:

A surprise. It´s "The Sentinel" with a small 19% drop and a second week above 20000. Not expected and way above expectations. Kiefer is really doing it here.

The Looser of the Week:

This one was not very fair but it was the only possible solution. After being one week the winner this week´s the looser with an ok result. "Miami Vice" with a 38% drop has the biggest one and wins the not very good prize. But we have to admit this is one very good looser. Congrats the same for Mr.Mann for making more than 300000 spectators for this film here. NO one expect it but it did.

Bye and see ya in some time.

Good Night and Good Films.

Crítica de Cinema - Uma Família à beira de um Ataque de Nervos

Em Território "Indie"
"Are you kidding me? It was a fucking paradise. They got pool... They got golf... Now I'm stuck with Mr. Happy here, sleeping on a fucking sofa. Look, I know you are a homo and all, but maybe you can appreciate this. You go to one of those places, there's four women for every guy. Can you imagine what that's like?"
.
Exactamente.
So mesmo visto, porque a descricao nao mostra o quanto estranho e aquele momento.
.
Nota do Filme - Uma Família à Beira de um Ataque de Nervos - 6/10

55th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

Still here to do some damage, in commenting the box-office here in Portugal.

And what do we say about this last week. Well, it´s a down week by 8%. And also the start of a worst movie month for all films involved. School is back on and cinema always gets when that happens. So 288701 spectators tought otherwise and went see the top ten movies of the week.
And the small drop is thanks to a big opener with a very decent average per theather. Try 2060 spectators per theather/week. Not bad indeed.
And when there is a big opener we have big drops for all the other movies but on that category, one definetely stands out.

So continue reading because it´s about to start another week of numbers here in Portugal.

This concerns the week between 31 of August to 6 of September.

The Champion:

And the number one film is a romantic comedy. But one with a very big advantage over the other ones. It has Owen Nilson and even if you don´t like him, now everything he does turns to box-office magic. And "You, Me and Dupree" is no exception. With a 94760 spectators opening, we have to admit, very strong for this kind of film, beeing even bigger than his last adventure in marriage with Vince Vaughn.
So congrats to Owen and he is big here no doubt.

The New players:

At number 4 we find "The Sentinel", the 24 spinoff with Kiefer Sutherland doing what he knows best (for him this is too easy now) and a stiff Michael Douglas doing what he still thinks can get away with. Eva Longoria is a little bit out of the loop there but okay. The film is not bad but it´s not also anything new so it gets old very fast. It still got 24893 spectators for the week. An ok opening considering the film and the portuguese box-office.

We find "Monster House" at number 6 with 17519 spectators in a bad opening for a animation movie. We are getting tired and soon all the world will follow. But i have to say this was one of the best reviewed animation movie in Portugal this year and that has got to be said. It could be a sleeper film. One that grows with you in time. I will try it in DVD.

Finally at number 18 is "Paradise, Now" the controversial nominated movie about terrorism of the Palestine territories and that everybody thought it shouldn´t have been at the Oscars since it´s not a country. I guess that is the problem. A people without a country can only be like this. But don´t expect a bad guy/good guy of terrorism. In this case we are talking about people. Normal people and there are bad guys and good guys in every country. Even the ones that don´t exist. It got 1945 spectators in just one theather. Very good opening.

The Winner of the Week:

What other than "You, Me and Dupree", it opened big, had an impressive 2060 average per theather/week and it´s not a big blockbuster. Congrats all too Owen Wilson mainly. He is getting huge in here. He´s face is getting the brand FUN.

The Looser of the Week:

And for the second straight week it´s no other than "Superman Returns" with a 62% drop to 9302 spectators and a very bad result in total numbers. Only it´s opening was ok altough not impressive. It just failed to connect with the audience.

Well see you tomorrow maybe. But definitely one other day. Bye.

Good Night and Good Films
