65th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

Hello and Welcome to another box-office Analysis. This is, already, number 65. I never thought I would hold on for so long. I will try to continue the work as long as I can. It´s not the best but at least it exists…

In this week we have lots of news. Two of them are at the top three. We have a new number one. The return of a big Hollywood master. Yes, that can be two at least. Or maybe even more. But this one is one that doesn’t get much love from those parts. Now the answer is very easy. Just check the table below to see if you guessed it.
And the other is a new entry, coming from Europe, a co production, of an international best-seller. But as for what critics are concerned, the film is not that good. It is even being called gratuitous. Despite the few theatres it is in, it´s having very good average results.
There is only one more film opening and only at number 16.

Let’s go directly to the numbers of this week.

This report concerns the week from 9 to 15 of November.

The Champion:

And we have a new number one. It’s the old master Scorsese with it’s latest film, “The Departed”. It opened in more theaters than expected, 61 to be exact, and got an average above the 1000 mark. A very good result, although not very impressive in terms of Portuguese Box-Office. The U.S run was definitely better. But this is Scorsese, in what I like to call Automatic Quality. Doing what he does best in a place, he doesn’t know. It’s not Little Italy, in New York, but Boston. But he really does ok. You just have to know your cinema, and he definitely knows it.

The New Players:

At number 3, the better performance of the week is from a European Co-Production, of an international best seller, “The Perfume”. Who hasn’t read it?
It made an impressive 1303 average for a total of 29971 spectators and a top three position.
It’s just a pity the film doesn’t do justice to the book. It is not as good, and that is a fact.
If you don’t know the story, check the book. But I can already advance it’s a story of a very special serial killer.

The other only opener of the week is found at number 16. It’s “The Night Listener”. It got 2227 spectators for an ok average of 742. The latest from Robin Williams (in serious mode) got a very impressive average for a movie almost ignored by the press. A good sign for Robin Williams.

The Winner of the Week:

Yes, the prize goes to “The Perfume” because of the more than good average of 1303. Way above “The Departed” and all the other movies of the week. Due, in part, to a huge popularity of the book. It’s already in it’s 30th Edition in here.

The Looser of the Week:

One word, “The Guardian”. A drop of 54% and an average of just 376. Not the lowest of the week, but due to it’s enormous drop, it gets the prize it deserves. And being in it´s 5th week doesn’t help either.

See you next week.

64th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

A new week is starting, and a new analysis is ready. The first one i wrote in Portugal for a long time. It felt good.
.
Thew news are not much, though. We have the same number one for the second week and even number 2 is the same one. Only one new film at the top three and that means at number three. A animation movie. One more, that right. Feeling tired of always speaking of animation movies. We love them but they are starting to become boring. No more 3D animals, please?
We had 208582 spectators for the top ten movies, meaning a 21% drop from last Week. This was due to the lack of big openers and usually drops in the 35% area for each film already at the top.
So let´s check out the actual numbers.

This concerns the week between 2 to 8 of November.

The Champion:

And for the second straight week we have the same new number one. It´s “The Devil Wears Prada” with 49550 spectators in it´s second week and a drop of 32%. A very good result for an opening so big last week. Generally big openers drop in the 40% category. But not this devil. Expect a very good result, very near the 250.000 as a total result. And the translation of the book to Portuguese some weeks before the opening must have helped a lot also. A very good marketing device, no doubt. One sells and it helps the other one.

The New Players:

“Dead or Alive”, another videogame adaptation in the B-Series area, is a decent entertainment but nothing more than that. After you’ve seen it, you will forget it almost instantly. It still made 10170 spectators for a 565 average, and got a 8th position place, a very under par result. Next week, expect it long gone. And it won’t come back. Good Riddance. I guess I am repeating myself.

The best average of the openers, with 1004 per theatre/Week, goes to “The Illusionist”, at number 9. The average is pretty impressive for a movie so discrete in terms of marketing. In just 9 theaters it managed 9033 spectators for the week. Edward Norton´s comeback to a big part and of course, the magical setback is pretty popular in Portugal. We just love Magic.

At number 14 and way off the top 10, we find the Italian success that was “Manuale D´Amore”. With 4316 spectators for an average of 617 it outdid most of Italian movies (except for the Roberto Benigni´s ones) that, for sure, are not very popular in this part. The neorealism is very far away from these parts. The golden age of Italian cinema is long gone and with it the full theatres it had in the 60 and 70´s in Portugal. Especially after the revolution in 1974. These are new times. And this ones don’t have spectators nor the quality of other days.

Finally, the last entry of the week, at number 16 is “Paris Je t´aime”, where 18 directors from very different backgrounds, give they’re love letter to the city of romance, Paris. It managed 3657 spectators in 6 theaters. A good result for 18 short films all put together in a big film. As in all short film collections there are strong and not so strong parts. Still one to look for, and since this works like a trip to all main Paris famous places, it’s a keeper if you want to visit the town soon.

The Winner of the Week:

With an almost identical average to it’s first week (1126) and almost 50.000 spectators, we have found a winner. And the fact it landed the number one spot for 2 times in two weeks is not bad either. It’s “The Devil Wears Prada”. Also a hit in Portugal, for sure.

The Looser of the Week:

For the second week, it’s yet again “Click”. A disappointing run, but one that was expected. People are tired of seeing the same film, over and over again. Adam Sandler´s needs to diversify the films he enters. It went down 45% this week for 7902 spectators. But he still makes 150.000 per film. And that is not for everybody. Literally…

Well, see you next week.
Good Night and Good Films.

63th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

It’s the 7th I made in the desert. And the “thirst” for civilization grows each day. Especially to go again to the cinema and see a good movie. The last one was “The Departed” from Mr. Scorsese so it has been a long time ago (5 weeks and 2 days to be exact). But I particularly miss the people I love.

Well no more talk about feelings and let’s start with this week’s new entries.
We have a new number one and a very solid one, although it’s still not the most impressive run of the week. That is reserved for a movie that is not a surprise for someone who lives in Portugal, but could be for everyone else. And the chance for you to see it on your country is close to zero. Only in here it’s possible to see, so why not a visit to this beautiful country? And not only because of this. You have so much to see here.
Returning to the openings, we have another one at the top three. And although the number of spectators is good, the average is far from impressive.
Another opener at the top ten but it only counted one day since it opened one day before the start of the new movie week. That’s why the number is far from impressive. Next week we will find it’s true strength. We are talking of an animation movie so it should have a good opening. Or did the gold vein finally gave it’s last hurrah??
Finally the return (maybe for the last time?) of a great American director. He’s already part of history and received, last year, is long overdue Oscar. You know who I am talking about, no? Of course you know. If you don’t you are not a true movie buff. And should study a little bit more of cinema history. It’s only 100 years but it’s already so rich. Every day it’s knowledge gets bigger. And it’s difficult to catch up to old times when the new ones overwhelm you. But you have to try.

Let’s get to the numbers of true. And in this week they are as it follows.

This report concerns the week between 26 of October and 1 of November.

The Champion:

“The Devil Wears Prada”.
After it’s, more than impressive, amazing performance in the U.S of A it reaches Portugal in a state of grace and behind a big campaign. The book was, recently, re-released, and is selling good. And with movie poster all around the place, marks this very impressive campaign. And Ms Meryl Streep as a calling card is always a good pick up to get people on theaters. It gets 72545 spectators but it still doesn’t get the best average. That is a job for the Portuguese movie that comes after, “Filme da Treta”. After two weeks at the top, in number of spectators it still continues with the average first place. 1242 to 1189 from “The Devil Wears Prada”. Still a good opening for Portuguese standards to this kind of movie, the Romantic Comedy/Drama.

At number 3 is “Children of Men” with it’s 30560 spectators and the lowly 700 average per theater. Not impressive but a good result after Cuaron’s trip to Harry Potter land in is latest film, which follows the crusade of a man, asked to protect a woman that after some years with no newborns in a Earth, is the final hope to save the planet. A grim view to Earth’s future, that got some attention but not enough to make it a success. But as I said before more than 28000 spectators is already a good opening in Portuguese standards, especially in no-blockbuster land.

Opening at Wednesday, and just for a day we have “Boog & Elliot” that managed 9075 spectators in just one day. We have to wait for next week to see how they behave in a full week. I don’t expect a very strong week, when a few days ago other animation movie opened, “ Barnyard”. But still it will be stronger than this week’s one day result, that is for sure.

Finally, and closing the top 20, is the latest movie(and yes, his last one) from Robert Altman. It’s called “Prarie Home Companion”. What a cinema master is obliged to do. The studio demanded to have in the film, a second director, in case he died. And not every day director, but Pt. Anderson, the same who brought us Magnolia, yes it’s true. With an average of almost 600, and 1794 spectators in just 3 theaters. A small movie having small but respectable numbers. I see cinema masters can still gather a crowd, even in a more personal movie.

The Winner of the Week:

For the third straight week, it’s still “Filme da Treta”, the winner . The best average and a strong third week (above 50000) marks it’s third and now the best movie of the year. It’s the first one to get three winner titles, in three straight weeks. Impressive.

The Looser of the Week:

Adam Sandler, the looser of the week. I didn’t expect to say this one day (although in his films, he always starts as a looser and ends as a winner) but his 4th week had only a 326 average and a 33% drop. Not very bad but it still was the worst of the week. And don’t expect much better next week. The film is “Click”, if you didn’t guessed it.

See you next week. And this time already at home. Finally.

Bye.
Good Night and Good Films.

62th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

The clock is ticking. Still 3 more hours to “work”. In this special case, since there is nothing to do, today, at work, I’m doing the Box-Office report of the week. Of the many ones that I’ve been leaving behind since I started working in the petroleum industry. More a little bit about my life, but that not what brings each one of you here. You are here to read about movies and especially the box-office in Portugal. So it’s time to move to that area.

Not many things changed in this week’s first top ten. And in the top 2 we have exactly the same two and almost the same numbers. Hard to believe but it’s true.
We had a –11% drop comparing with last week’s top ten, and this means 222076 spectators.

Two new openers to the top ten, one directly to number 3. This marks the return of a great director to another great story. You really should see the number 3 movie. But for that prepare to something a little bit different from the usual biopic. Seeing Converse shoes, New Order songs in a period movie could really meddle with your head. If you don’t believe this is possible you haven’t seen the number 3 movie. No, I won’t tell just yet. Or you already know which one it is.

The other one is a little bit more faster than the previous. It mixes drugs, high adrenaline and a lot of fighting and running. The perfect movie to stay in shape. With Mr. Jason Statham to put your heart in a high race mode.

Not making the top ten, we find two other movies. One trying to invent a adolescent Bon, that failed miserably and one trying to mixture Royal people with common people. The result is hilarious. Not the best movie, but give a chance to this French movie.

Done with the letters. And the numbers are:

The Champion:

No news in the first place. No surprise this week. Still maintaining the first place is “Filme da Treta”. But what was not expected was this strong hold. A mere 4% drop, marks another record of one of the best hold of a number one film in it’s second week. Indeed, it’s career in Portuguese Box-Office is of glory and gold. Will it beat the numbers of “Crime do Padre Amaro” from last year. That is another, and much more difficult story. But who knows. With this holds it is possible to do it. It made 65369 spectators in it’s second week. The numbers speak for themselves. The fact that no big films opened also helped this result a lot.

The New Players:

We find the first opening at number 3, with, “Marie Antoinette”, the latest from acclaimed director Sofia Copolla, only the third woman to get a recognition for best director from the Academy. She didn’t get the prize but got another of best Screenplay. The usual prize for the best film of the year. The Best Film is just a prize for the best advertised film of the year or famous as you’d prefer.
Sofia maintains her style of adolescent women and their problems. It’s about becoming an adult, in this case for Princess Marie Antoinette, a 14 year old princess sent to marry the future King of France Luis XIV (if I’m not mistaken). A very loose adaptation of the story of Marie in the French court of XVIII century. A period of decadence, showed in a very particular way by the eye of this, already, big director of cinema.
Talking about numbers, they are strong with a 1518 average per week/theater and 25819 spectators. A strong opening indeed.

“Crank” is, on the other hand, a big disappointing moment for action movie. Could the action Hero be Dead. Jason Statham was now one of the biggest, but this film shows that the formula as worn out. The idea of this film is a good one but maybe people are starting to get tired. With 32 theaters only 14915 spectators went see it. That means a 466 average per theater/week. Not good news for Jason after his Transporter 2 that failed to go after it’s predecessor but with good results. It’s all downhill from here? We will see.

At 11th position is a pre-teen Bond “Alex Ryder: Operation Stormbreaker” with 7124 spectators and a 356 average. I guess people are waiting for the real deal that will open in theaters in 23 of November, here in Portugal. We will se in a few weeks. Oh, by the way. This film sucks big time. I don’t advise it to anyone, not even my enemies and especially if you are a Bond Fan. The only plus on this is seeing Ewan Mcgregor playing Bond type character at the beginning of the film. I guess he wanted to try the feeling without the responsibility and the burden of carrying the name of Bond to the end. Now he has to stick to Obi Wan Kenobi.

The final entry is found at number 17. A French film called “Palais Royal” with 2803 spectators for an average of 400. With some notable exceptions, like last year’s “The Beat My Heart Skipped” with Romain Duris, usually French cinema fails to connect to Portuguese audiences. Before that only Amelie, that was a massive success in just a few select theaters got to the Portuguese heart. But this is a good option to reconcile with French comedy. It is about a royal family, based loosely in the English Monarchy, that is completely not perfect. And with the addiction of the new wife of the future king things start to become even more strange. I recommend it. I will check it out. But don’t expect a perfect film, just a good comic with the French Touch.

The Winner of the Week:

Again it’s “Filme da Treta” for the second straight week. Why? The highest average, number 1, highest number of spectators, best hold for a champion in it’s second week. I rest my case. But Sofia Coppola’s came a very close second. But still not good enough.

The Looser of the Week:

For the third time we have “World Trade Center”. What begun with an amazing opening and the winner of the week, dropped very rapidly in the next week and is going downhill in each passing week. This week’s 49% drop to number 8, and also marking it’s disappearance from the top ten movies. But for final numbers it’s still pretty good, 251378 spectators. Very impressive.

And yes, it’s time to say goodbye.

See you next week.

Crítica de Cinema - Marie Antoinette

Filme de Época mas Pouco

"Let them eat cake."

As mulheres e a mudança.
