48th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

The number 50 is rapidly aproaching, but can´t confirm if it will be in two weeks.
Who knows where i will be in the next two weeks.
But if am around i will surely do something special, still don´t know what but will do something.

Ok, getting back to what matters and that´s the boxoffice news in Portugal.
It was a strong week comparing it with the last week by over 15%. That means it got 264708 spectators for the top ten movies of the week.
This is in part due to a big openning of another 3D animation movie. Which one? There are so many that it is much more difficult to guess. Just a hint, it´s not from Pixar.
There is also a big number of openers at the top 20 spots. Yes, it´s five new movies at the top. Check them out.

The Champion:

And yes, it´s a new champion and a 3D animation movie, it´s "Over the Edge". The latest from Dreamworks (hope am not wrong, with this onslaught of new animation movies) gets to the top spot with an excellent opening of 116426 spectators and a 1595 spectators per theather. Much better than the 1200 from "Cars" and on it´s way to a great result. But still faraway from this year biggest animation movie "Ice Age 2".

They are still hot and we can´t deny it. Animation movies rule. Personally, a little bit sick of all this critters.

Crítica de Cinema - Piratas da Caraíbas - O Cofre do Homem Morto

Não Basta o Jack

"Turns out not even Jack Sparrow can best the devil."

Este último "Piratas da Caraíbas" sofre do habitual sindroma da sequelas. A vontade de mostrar as mesmas coisas numa escala maior leva a exageros e que se ninguém tiver mão tende a escalar para uma profunda confusão. E neste caso o que paga é o argumento que tem mais histórias paralelas do que, como diria Jack Sparrow, existem piratas na ilha de Tortuga. E vejam que no filme são bastantes...

Neste segundo filme, que clama no seu final pela terceira parte (já em preparação), Jack Sparrow (Jonhny Depp numa interpretação deveras embriagante numa personagem difícil de esquecer para o mal e bem) tem de vencer outra maldição sobrenatural (a repetição começa a sentir-se) bastante mais terrível e perigosa. Tem uma dívida de sangue para com Davy Jones, o capitão do "Flying Dutchman" e que ele próprio se encontra almadiçoado. Caso não pague a dúvida é condenado a passar uma eternidade a servir no barco de Davy Jones. Como sempre Jack põe Will e Elizabeth na confusão e os planos de casamento acabam adiados.

Mas tudo isto pode ser evitado com a descoberta do Cofre do Homem Morto. Que esconde um terrível segredo. Qual será? Ainda em exibição num cinema perto de si.

Não, isto não é publicidade. Porque quem viu o primeiro filme não perde grande coisa em dispensar este segundo. Não digo evitar porque ainda passei umas boas horas a ver esta amalgama de filmes sobrepostos entre si com mais twists que, adivinharam, piratas no filme.

Admito que o final é empolgante e deixa uma pessoa em polvorosa para ver a parte final da história. Mas isso só para o ano. Pelo meio aparece uma tribo de canibais em que Jack torna-se um Deus, um barco cheio de peixes (não assustavam assim tanto como isso), moinhos de água, duelos com espadas a três, ataques de bestas marinhas, um vilão calculista e claro muito rum. Com isto tudo bem misturado obtemos esta autêntica caldeirada, com peixinho e tudo.

É pena é mesmo não existir filme como no primeiro tomo (com principio, meio e fim)

Mas não é por isso que não aprecio uma boa caldeirada.

Another week analysed in the shortest possible time.
Can´t write many commentaries if i want to get this right again. I hope you understand.

In the middle of July. The World Cup is Long Gone. And know is the summer. And what do people want? The Beach, especially here in Portugal.

Well at least until those Pirates land in portuguese waters. Then they want those dark movie theathers. Ohhhh ye... And this time it´s to watch the movie.

This concerns the week between the 6th and 12th of July.

46th Portuguese Box-Office Analysis

Another week trying to put everything in order. But it is becoming increasingly difficult.

Yes, am still trying. i didn´t gave up.
I could say this was a stronger week by a 20% margin. It managed to bring 214886 spectators to see the top ten movies to the movie theathers. In the middle of all decisions of the world Cup. But since now the games are really more far apart it is possible to see both of them.

And it is happening. In the first 6 months of this year more 350.000 spectators visited the movie comparing to 2005 results. That´s a 35% increase in numbers. All thankx to big films openning and not because of any marketing or something. The strenght is still on the big blockbusters in which "The Da Vinci Code" played the stronger part.

But this week there is a new number one and no it´s not "The Da Vinci COde". Just continue reading to see which one is it.

The Champion:

Yes, it´s a new one. And what is it? None other than Pixar´s latest "Cars". With 7 consecutive number one films they are hot and they will continue that way as long as they continue to do the greats movies they do. Not just the best animation movies but the best movies. And as i usually say they always get me on the detail they put on every movie screen. They are just beautiful to watch. It managed 68700 spectators to an average per week of 981. Not bad but it deserved to be even better. But in the summer the competition is really rough so a very good result.

The New Players:

At number 6 we find "When a Stranger Calls" with 9751 spectators for a 813 average per theather. A decent opening considering it´s the dreaded Pg-13 horror movie. Comeone... Is still there any reall horror movie fan that still looks at this kind of pictures? The "fly of the chair" trick just doesn´t work it for me. Good riddance.

"The Secret Life of Words" is found at number 13, out of the top 10. With a meager 424 average per theather for 2542 spectators this is a disapointing start but an expected one. No marketing, no buzz whatsoever and it was destined to be one of those that falls under the radar. It just lacks something.

The Other Players:

On the downside we find "Asterix et les Vikings" with a poor week and a 54% drop. That got to hurt!!!It managed 5141 spectators more than many films but that drop in a good week doesn´t sound great. It sounds really awful. But this still makes it the foreign movie most seen in Portugal (Ps:American movie here are the national movies, officially).

On the upper side, and the good news go to "Take the Lead", Bandera´s latests is on a hot streak. Dance movies get people to movies here in Portugal. Every dance movie was always a hit here. We are a very dancable crowd. It managed 19015 spectators and a 16% rise in numbers. Very nice indeed.

Crítica de Cinema - Eu, Tu e Todos os que Conhecemos

Em Demasia, Enjoa "Say, "You poop into my butt hole and I poop into your butt hole... back and forth... forever."

Depois de ler esta frase e principalmente depois de a ouvir no cinema, o que até então era suportável e com um feel "indie" deixa de ser engraçado. E começa verdadeiramente a descambar. E se eu disser que é dito por um míudo com 3 anos? Exactamente, concordam comigo.

O filme acompanha a vida de Christine, artista plástica (curiosamente como é na vida real) que para sobreviver trabalha numa empresa de táxis para idosos e Richard, um recém divorciado que tenta ainda adaptar-se à sua situação e ao mesmo tempo tentar uma ligação com os seus dois filhos. A solidão une Christine, Richard e todas as outras personagens que fazem parte da sua vida.

Miranda July tenta dar um "feel" indie a um filme que vem a reboque do que eu gosto de chamar o filão "Magnolia" mas sem a qualidade de realização de Pt. Anderson, nem sequer com o seu faro para tornar o que é estranho, no que é familiar. Não é toda a gente que consegue tornar uma chuva de sapos na coisa mais normal do mundo. E é aí que Miranda July falha. Como artista plástica multifacetada tenta abarcar o cinema no seu mundo artístico. Mas esse ainda precisa claramente de muito treino.

Existem duas "teenager" que discutem sobre quem faz o melhor "Blow Job", míudos de 3 anos a falar em chats de internet com conversas absolutamente ridículas. Pessoas que se afastam ou aproximam umas das outras sem razão aparente. Enfim, uma confusão dos diabos. Com excepção de John Hawkes - ainda recentemente visto num pequeno papel no Miami Vice (no papel de Richard) torna-se até constrangedor vê-los no grande ecrã. Os mais novos são péssimos actores sem qualquer expressividade e todos os secundários parecem ter sido descobertos na rua e chamados para actuar no filme.

Existem uns bons momentos que me permitem dar outra perspectiva ao filme que não de um zero absoluto como o bom final encontrado para a história principal, ou a cena em que o fogo é o actor principal (realmente surpreendente).

Posso estar a ser um pouco exagerado mas este filme testou-me a paciência. Este nem aconselhado para fãs "hardcore" de filmes indie. Há quem goste, eu não fui um deles. Tem o seu momento de ouro que me permite dizer que não foi tempo totalmente perdido mas não deixa de ser de qualidade inferior. Volta P.T. Anderson, fazes falta.

I´m back. After 4 weeks working at a rig site in Sicily.
And no, i was not on vacation as everybody still continues to say. Going abroad doesn´t mean going on vacation ok???

As promised i will try to put the box-office analysis on time but am starting to see it´s an herculean job. But still, will try to do it. The more i can possible do. Not less.

Going way meant stepping out of the portuguese reality and entering in this case the italian reality (no subtitles, all voices replaced by italian. Arghhhhhhhh. I don´t know how you can handle that. I sure can´t).

But going way back to were we left we get to the week between 22 to 28 of June. Really way back.
And this weeks means a change in leadership after 5 weeks at the top for the "Da Vinci Code". And the new one is not a big surprise in a very soft week for cinema. Because at this time the World Cup is at the highest interest possible and nobody cares about cinema. Only football matters.
The week had a 13% drop in number of spectators for the top ten movies to the number of 179542.

This analysis concerns the week of June between 22 to 28.

The Champion:

Considering the films opening and the films that were already in theathers this was a esay one to guess. "The Fast and the Furious 3 - Tokyo Drift", with a complete new cast. No Vin Diesel in sight or even Paul Walker. Just a bunch of unknowns and some you didn´t wanted to know like Bow Wow. Change the name, please. It doesn´t suit you. The film is more of the same in a more profound way. No actors to look at so just the cars matter. And what do people that like car racing want to see?? That´s right... Girls... And cars ofcourse. A decent debut to 77457 spectators. Don´t have the numbers of the 2 previous films but this isn´t that bad. Since cars are not my thing i don´t like this one but for fans it´s a no brainer.

The New Openers:

Only one made the cut in the top 20. It´s "Klimt", kind of, autobiography that managed to land a number 11 spot with 3222 spectators in just 3 theathers. A very strnge film, the so called author film, from Raoul Ruiz with John Malkovich interpreting yet another, artist´s life full of all artists problems. Personally biopics are really getting on my nerve so anyhting that shows is already catalogued as the same thing. They say this is strange and different. Still no curiosity to go see it. But who knows. You might like it.

The Other Films:

In a very down week. All films dropping in the viccinity of 45% (average)i have to talk of the film that had the most impressive week. And that´s "RV". With a small (for the week) 29% drop to 13990 it managed to gain a spot and stay away from much stronger competition like the X-Men. Not bad for a film were RW (Robin Williams) does more of the same. I´m telling this but the man used to be my Idol. Then i grew up. But i still think he is a great comedian. He just needs a big comic movie to get on top. And one that is actually funny.

Crítica de Cinema - Carros

São os Detalhes, Estúpido

"Well, the road didn't cut through the land like that interstate. It moved with the land, it rose, it fell, it curved. Cars didn't drive on it to make great time. They drove on it to have a great time. "

Sim, são os detalhes. Alguém tem dúvidas?

A primeira pergunta que faço é esta. Ainda há alguém que suporta os filmes de animação em 3D que se repetem continuamente em cada filme que passa? Ou ainda não perceberam isso. Com algumas notáveis excepções (felizamente) os filmes de animação actuais estão tão formatizados que começa a ser um súplicio. Tudo começou, o ano passado, com o "Madagáscar" e a partir daí todos os filmes são cópias uns dos outros. Não admira que estejam sempre a sair.

Acham que estou a exagerar? Então expliquem isto. Qual é a explicação para o facto de a maior parte do filmes de animação 3D sejam sobre animais ?(com excepção da Pixar que explora novas vertentes e é a pioneira da animação a 3D).

Porque o software para o controlo dos mesmos é mais fácil de melhorar com novos add-ons sem dar muito trabalho. Um caso típico é o filme "The Wild" que chegou ao ponto de ser uma cópia (animais que fogem de um zoo, onde já ouvi isso) de um filme anterior. A Disney estava a descer mesmo muito baixo. Felizmente a Pixar domina agora o gigante e lenda da animação e melhores dias virão para o estúdio. Espero eu.

Mas outros exemplos podiam ser mencionados como "Pular a Cerca", "O Rapaz Formiga", "Idade do Gelo 1 e 2" e todos os outros filmes de animação que têm saído. Como se apenas animais podem contar histórias. Com este filme a Pixar prova que até os "Carros" podem ter uma dimensão humana.

O Filme acompanha a personagem de "Lightning" Mcqueen, um convencido carro de corridas que apenas pensa em vencer. Quando, a caminho da corrida decisiva do título mundial, tem um acidente e vai parar a uma pequena aldeia perdida no meio do nada, Radiator Springs. E não é numa estrada qualquer mas na famosa Route 66 que atravessa todo os E.U.A, da ponta este à oeste. Aí conhece os poucos habitantes da aldeia que sofrem com o desvio de todos os carros, que agora não passam naquela estrada mas na autoestrada que foi ali construída. Com o tempo que é obrigado a passar por aquelas bandas começa a dar mais importância ao que realmente interessa na vida. Porque a vida não é só ganhar.

Retirado totalmente da imaginação de um dos big "Kahuna" da animação, John Lasseter, chega-nos este brilhante prodígio de tecnologia mas que continua com o eterno lado humano mesmo debaixo de todos aqueles cavalos de potência. A sensação de velocidade transmitida nas corridas é real e sem dúvida que a Pixar sabe fazer um filme cheio de emoção e adrenalina, com planos verdadeiramente extraordinários (quem faz filmes de corridas reais, bem pode fazer escola deste filme). Outra coisa que à partida era muito complicado, transformar máquinas em seres humanos que sentem é totalmente conseguido e de uma maneira aparentemente simples e sem alterar muito a fisionomia dos carros, que são imediatamente reconhecíveis. Foi acrescentada uma boca no pára-choques e está conseguido o efeito. Brilhante.

O argumento simples mas eficaz será talvez a parte mais fraca do filme (sendo que para a Pixar fraco equivale a um bom argumento) pois é uma história de ver o que realmente interessa e deixar o acessório. Mas acessório é coisa que a Pixar não dispensa com verdadeiras gemas como a poeira, vem vísivel na imagem em cima. Na ferrugem que alguns carros apresentam, na representação perfeita de todos os modelos apresentados como o saudoso Fiat 500 ("Topolino"), O Ferrari, o Porsche e muitos mais que abundam. Mas acima de tudo pelo pormenor do "Carocha" que representa os insectos que até neste Mundo são carros. E para os portugueses tem um significado ainda maior.

O que dizer de um filme que apesar de não ser o melhor do estúdio consegue estar num patamar bem acima do que faz a concorrência.

Um aviso para a concorrência. Abram os olhos!! São mesmo os detalhes, estúpidos.

De volta e de Parabéns

Ok, estou de volta. Pelo menos durante 2 semanas. A partir daí não sei.
Comecei por fazer a análise do filme " A Lula e a Baleia", um dos grandes filmes deste ano.

Quero também acrescentar que o blog fez 1 ano na minha ausência.
Mais precisamente, dia 7 de Agosto.
